How Long Does a Dynasty Rebuild Take? 5,938 Last-Place Teams | Dynasty Dealer

The typical dynasty rebuild takes 2 seasons

Of 5,938 dynasty teams that finished last, only 32.6% made the playoffs the next season. Within two seasons 58.7% had made it, within three 75.8%, and 21.4% had won a title within three seasons.

Key findings

  • Only 32.6% of last-place teams made the playoffs the next season (95% CI 31.4%–33.8%). A typical team makes it 54.5% of the time.
  • The median time from last place to the playoffs was 2 seasons: 58.7% had made it within two seasons (95% CI 57.1%–60.3%) and 75.8% within three (95% CI 73.9%–77.8%).
  • Titles take longer: 4.5% won the next season, 11.5% within two seasons and 21.4% within three (95% CI 19.6%–23.2%). A typical team has a 25.1% chance of a title in any three seasons.
  • Replicated in an independent 2024 sample of 2,624 last-place teams: 33.8% made the playoffs the next season, 74.3% within three seasons, and the median was again 2 seasons.

What we found

The cohort is every team that finished last in its league's regular-season standings in a season with a later season on record, kept with the same owner: 5,938 teams. Each team is followed until its first playoff appearance and its first title. It leaves the follow-up when its owner changes or the league's records end.

The first season after last place is the hardest: 32.6% reached the playoffs, against 54.5% for a typical team. The gap then closes. By the third season 75.8% had made the playoffs, against 90.6% for a typical team over three seasons.

Share of last-place teams that had made the playoffs, by seasons since finishing last (Kaplan–Meier), against a typical team's odds.

Robustness checks

Two alternative rebuild definitions give almost the same answer: counting a bottom-two finish as a rebuild, or keeping only leagues with no ownership changes.

Does it hold in 2024? Yes

The same frozen code was run on an independent sample of 2024 leagues, following 2,624 last-place teams. The numbers were nearly identical: 33.8% made the playoffs the next season (95% CI 32.0%–35.7%), 59.5% within two seasons and 74.3% within three. The median was again 2 seasons, and 19.3% had won a title within three seasons. The finding replicated.

How the study works

Last place means the fewest wins, with a tie counted as half a win, then the fewest points for. The curves are Kaplan–Meier estimates with Greenwood 95% intervals, which account for teams whose follow-up ended early.

  • Baseline: a league's playoff share (playoff teams ÷ teams), and the chance an ordinary team with independent seasons would reach the playoffs within 1, 2 or 3 seasons.
  • Robustness checks: a bottom-two finish as the rebuild definition, and only leagues with no ownership changes.

Limitations

  • Leagues that folded are not in the sample, which was drawn from leagues active in 2025. Rebuilds in leagues that died may have gone worse.
  • A last-place finish is not always a deliberate rebuild.
  • Most teams can be followed for only one or two seasons, so the three-season figures rest on fewer teams and have wider intervals.
  • One platform's public leagues only.

Data, method and verification

Public dynasty leagues on a major fantasy football platform, read from the platform’s own public league records (settings, rosters, weekly lineups and scores, transactions, playoff brackets). None of Dynasty Dealer’s player values, trade database or users are used.

The plan was registered before any result was seen: Dynasty League Case Studies: Pre-Registered Analysis Plan (DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/F8K59). Every team's follow-up was reproduced by a second, independently written implementation, and randomly chosen teams were checked by hand against the raw league records.
